Chief Fernandez had been as good as his word. He had called me around nine the next morning, after Nina had gone to take her last exam and after I’d called Sunny Sands. His voice was totally upbeat.

“My daughter Emily is delighted that Mally has a forever home,” he said. “I guess that poor dog has been moping around. Her tail is dragging the ground behind her. Not a good sign.”

I agreed. “No, it’s not.”

“Emily has the evening off. She’s working a double tomorrow. I suggested that you split the difference, drive-wise. How about if you meet her halfway around eight in this evening? I can suggest a rest stop near Fort Lauderdale. I’ll text you the location.”

“Perfect,” I said, making a mental note to bake a batch of biscotti, Italian cookies, to take to the chief. He deserved that much and more.

I texted Nina a note with the good news, knowing she would check her phone after she took her test. Two and a half hours later, Nina tapped on my front door. I let her in and said hi.

“This is for you.” I handed over a shiny new key on a small ring. “That’s to this house.”

“Wow, thanks.” Her backpack was slung over one shoulder and her face was eager. The quick way her eyes took in her surroundings promised that she was looking for one thing, and one thing only, the missing golden retriever. “Did you hear from them? Huh? Can we go and get Mally?”

Nina sounded like she was ten, instead of twice that. She was as eager as a little girl.

I put a hand on her shoulder lest her exuberance send her soaring into outer space. “We’re meeting Emily tonight at eight at a rest stop north of Fort Lauderdale. How did your test go?”

The backpack hit the floor. “Fine. It seemed easy. I guess that means I knew what I was doing, right? I got done really quick. Then I went over my answers again.”

I bit my lip rather than correct her by saying, “Quickly.” Instead I added, “Sounds good to me. I always had a sense of whether I’d done well or not. If the questions seemed familiar, if there weren’t any surprises, then I’d feel confident about my grade.”

She slumped into one of my dining room chairs. “I wish Mrs. Delahunty was around to hear how I did. We worked together to raise my grades. Any word from Mrs. Delahunty?”

Luckily I could answer that honestly. “No. I haven’t heard from her or talked to her. I’m trying to get a handle on what happened, but I don’t have a definitive answer. Not yet.”

That mollified Nina. Or maybe she was so pleased with Mally’s return that she did not dare hope for more.

“I made a big pot of pasta e fagioli soup. Would you like some?”

“That sounds divine,” said Nina

I could, in good conscience, keep what I knew about Sunny Sands to myself. We’d located Mally. I knew where Mrs. Delahunty was and from what I’d been told, Mrs.
